Our Story

A small, intentional line — because when a formula works, it works.

For more than twenty years, we've formulated all natural and organic artisan skincare and apothecary products from our farm — built around raw honey, propolis, beeswax, and botanicals wildcrafted on the land we tend.

Raw honey isn't just an ingredient — it's the foundation. It's the only natural substance used in clinical wound care, a testament to properties that science is still uncovering. What sets it apart isn't just what it does on the surface — it's how it works at a cellular level, in ways that most skincare ingredients simply can't.

We don't formulate around trends. Botanicals are beautiful, but beauty on a label doesn't always translate to results on skin. Every ingredient we use is chosen because it has a demonstrated reason to be there — and every formula is developed by our in-house cosmetic chemist and hand batched from scratch. No bulk bases. No shortcuts.

We've kept our line small and purposeful — covering the full spectrum of skincare needs without the noise. When a formula truly works, you don't need a hundred variations of it.

Here's how it all began.

Meadowlake Farm Skin Care was born in 2005 when founder Sally and her husband Joel embarked on an unexpected journey. After Joel learned the art of organic beekeeping, Sally became fascinated with the remarkable benefits of honey as a skincare agent — and their story began.

The farm itself has been in Joel's family since 1959, originally named Meadowlake Farm by his great aunt and uncle. Before them, the land was owned by a naturopath — and it has always been a place where nature, not industry, takes center stage. Some places seem to choose their purpose. Meadowlake Farm is one of them.

A cosmetic chemist by training and a member of The Society of Cosmetic Chemists, Sally started tinkering with a few simple salves and gradually developed the full line as it exists today. A truly green chemist, she works exclusively with raw materials derived directly from nature — no synthetics, no shortcuts. Sally brings a rare combination of talents to Meadowlake Farm: a strong scientific foundation, a sharp business mind, and a deep love of craft, shaped by dual careers as a commercial architect and a newborn intensive care nurse.

Joel, a one-time small business owner, skilled tradesman, and talented craftsman, has been an essential partner in building the farm and the brand from the ground up.

The Team

Sally's sister Judy rounds out the Meadowlake Farm family. A registered nurse, wound care specialist, and health care administrator, Judy brought an already impressive depth of knowledge when she joined the team — and then took it further by becoming a certified family herbalist. Her expertise in herbal medicine has proven invaluable to our formulations and our mission to help people and the planet.

Our Mission

Everything we make is handcrafted in small batches on our farm, using ingredients we trust and stand behind. From hive to jar, we are committed to honest, effective skincare rooted in nature and guided by science.

Our Philosophy on Organic Certification

As pioneers in the organic skincare industry and owners of an organic honeybee farm that has raised many a crop of wildcrafted botanicals, we know more than a little about organic certification. In fact, we were involved in the movement for skincare companies to 'come clean'. So having been in the industry for so long as producers of some of the best and purest products around — as well as advocates at the national level for truth in labelling — why don't our products bear an organic certification label? This is a legitimate question which presents a great opportunity for us to educate people on this process and why, more importantly, we have opted out.

USDA Organic Certification of Cosmetics

The NOP (National Organic Program) is the federal regulatory branch of the USDA governing organic food production. When consumers first started to push for clarity on the term 'organic' in the personal care industry they turned to the NOP. However, the NOP cannot regulate personal care products because they regulate agricultural products for human consumption only. Skincare companies that formulate mainly with agricultural ingredients can get a certification label — but producers like us who incorporate a whole range of plant-based nonagricultural raw materials like essential oils and other botanicals can't be given full credit for the percentage of truly organic materials our products contain. That means for us, a USDA seal won't work.

There's a wide number of other organic certification organizations worldwide that sprung up in response to the quest for clarity on the term 'organic' in the personal care industry. These are for-profit companies offering seals with varying and often unclear standards. As you can see, organic seals don't necessarily mean what you think they do when you're looking for skincare that has been ethically crafted, processed and produced — as well as made from raw materials that are not only harmless but raised in a natural environment free from pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics and chemical solvents. That's how we define organic. That's how we define Meadowlake Farm.
